KP Holland is considered one of the leaders in greenhouse farming when it comes to sustainability. The company started with footprint calculations more than three years ago. Now KP Holland is also one of the first to have this data officially validated.
KP Holland is a global player in the field of breeding, propagating and producing Spathiphyllum, Curcuma and Kalanchoe. The company is aware of the importance of a greener world and the role the nursery itself plays in it. Therefore, several sustainable choices have been made in recent years. To map out how much impact those changes actually have, KP Holland decided to calculate the footprints of its products. “We picked this up in cooperation with Greenhouse Sustainability to find out where we stand,” says Commercial Director Pim van der Knaap. “Thanks to the Flori Footprint Tool, we now know exactly what our footprint is in terms of CO2 or water quality, for example, and we can make sustainability even more targeted.”

By also having the footprint calculations validated by ValidIT, KP Holland goes one step further. “Such validation is not yet requested from the market, but we ourselves felt it was important to know whether our assumptions and calculations were actually correct,” says Finance Director John Vreugdenhil. “That's why we validated the data from one location with three product variants. Although we were convinced that we had done the calculations correctly, by officially establishing that, you get one more confirmation that you are doing the right thing.” Meanwhile, KP Holland has prepared the footprint calculations of all its products as of 2021.
ValidIT, part of the LinkThings Group, is responsible for validation. By independently testing data for footprint calculations, the company wants to actively contribute to sustainability and transparency within the industry. This creates high reliability in the figures before they are presented in practice. “We were only given a few tips by ValidIT, but the outcome of our footprint calculations were correct,” Vreugdenhil says with appropriate pride. The company received a validation certificate with a reliability index. Thus, KP Holland can now demonstrate to the market that calculations have been performed correctly. “How we are going to propagate that, we are still investigating, but right now we are especially proud of the steps we have taken as an organization.”
